I thought I might share a technique that I get asked about quite alot. Now I strongly urge you to first check out my article called “45 Top Ways to get Twitter Followers – The definitive guide, just so you have a strong hold on best and worst practices.  There are plenty of software packages that you can purchase for a relatively small fee that will automate alot of this for you. Sometimes though you might be in a crunch to just get a Twitter account started and its info stream flowing nicely, instead of the dreaded “wait till they come” approach.

Why is this necessary?
Basically “you can’t enjoy a party if noone comes”. So you begin to bait and seed your Twitter channel so that at least you have the opportunity to get conversations started.

Here are the simple steps to get this moving:

01– Sign on to your Twitter account (must be logged in)

02– Go to http://tweepi.com/

03– Click on the gray button “Good old Free Tweepi” – or just login at the top

04– This will instantly try and connect its API to “your” Twitter account

Notes:
This is assuming you’ve already created a company profile
– you must have a LinkedIn profile

01- Select your company (under COMPANIES tab)

This is something I get asked all the time. Namely how do I build up my Twitter Followers. Now there is a best practiced rule of thought here. That thought is you do it organically by engaging , conversing, promoting (your profile), and becoming a part of the community that other would WANT to follow. However, there still is the interest in marketing that wants quick results for appearance or authority sake. The following methods are ways in which you can elevate your Twitter followers

For clarification though I’ve divided it into 2 lists that distinguish the approach, both work under different principles.

BEST PRACTICES: (White Hat)

01- Thought leader
Become a thought leader by introducing compelling articles, others will take notice if you apply this to your niche or market

02- Engage | Interact | Add Value
(by commenting and following others, you can increase your exposure on “their” Twitter pages and to their followers

03- Self promotion 1
(Add your Twitter url to your email signatures)

04- Self promotion 2
(Add your Twitter url to your direct mailers or printed materials)

05- Self promotion 3
(Add your Twitter url videos, webinars, TV commercials, ads)

06- Self promotion 4
(Add your Twitter url to your press releases)

07- Self promotion 5
(Add your Twitter url to your FORUM signatures)

08- Add your Twitter url to your social profiles (About me, Bio, Description)
(Add to FB, Linkedin, Myspace…)

301 redirect WWW to non WWW (.htaccess)

In some cases you’ll want to make sure and re-direct all usage of WWW to you non WWW web address. This will also consolidate your homepage link juice to make sure that only 1 url is getting credit rather than 2. The formal term for this is “URL canonicalization”

01- Open your .htaccess file in notepad

02- paste in the following code at the top of the document (replace yoursite.com with your own site address)

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.yoursite.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://yoursite.com/$1 [L,R=301]

03– save and overwrite your previous file (in root)

Note: you’ll also want to add the additional 301 redirects for the following reasons:

A site can have up to 4 variations. Though what that means is that your link popularity could also be divided between these variations.

Assuming your site address is http://yoursite.com, you”ll want to have the other 4 variations redirected to http://yoursite.com

Those other variations could be:
http://yoursite.com/index.htm
http://yoursite.com/index.html
http://www.yoursite.com/index.htm
http://www.yoursite.com/index.html

(Now its important to note this level of scrutiny should only be limited to your home page)
(you should also write your code depending on how your end desired URL should look)

Now to further the above code, I also suggest adding the following to and END RESULT like this:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.yoursite.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://yoursite.com/$1 [L,R=301]

redirect 301 /index.html http://yoursite.com/
redirect 301 /index.htm http://yoursite.com/
