Search Engine Optimization – The art of optimizing your web site to get found by search engines. Look here for all things SEO!

The Death of 1 Page SEO Sites

Sure you know the scoop by now. Pick out your keywords, grab a handfull or more of keyword URL domains and plant your seed sites into ground. The MO for this was, by doing this you claim important keyword traffic with a site URL that is also called your target keyword. Makes Sense?

I believe the technical term for this approach is called “One-Page Doorway Domains

So here’s the skinny. That worked for awhile and on few instances still works to some level. Though this, like any SEO tactic stars to become oversaturated, predictable and less effective.

Why? Because the SERPS also make adjustments to demand more from their sites.

Matt Cutts of Google delivers what appears to be bad news for mini-sites

According to the post, Google is once again changing their algorithm to penalize sites that “don’t have much content “above-the-fold”.

“In our ongoing effort to help you find more high-quality websites in search results, today we’re launching an algorithmic change that looks at the layout of a webpage and the amount of content you see on the page once you click on a result.” Continue reading The Death of 1 Page SEO Sites

SEO Predictions for 2012

The following SEO predictions are collected from a combination of personal studies and that of over 30 industry websites. It is thru this study that I have culminated the top and most anticipated movements within the SEO community. The points are noted and explained below:

1- Site Ownership of materials will take pecedence in the years ahead

Implementation of REL=author , REL=publisher tags to associate authorship from site TO articles TO Googe+ (a method implement to help identify ownership, battle spam, battle scrapers and more validate ranking / listings)

Add author tag to page – points back to your google + page as author = association and increase rankings

Google announced is implementing “signals” for which page is orignal and which is not
(these are being guessed as the new author / publisher tags)

2- Anchor Links will begin to devalue as high placement ranking indicators

(this is due to too many sites “gaming” this aspect of ranking)
However, there is “STILL” value for sites who wish to build relatioships between data on their sites. SEO’s are suggesting giving more attention rather to stronger “calls to action” (CTA’s), than to assume anchor linking will cover all bases.

3- “Host crowding” is being implemented

– prevents too many results from “one” site
= fair and balanced, should help to eliminate 1 site listing multiple times for keyword used. This has been an ongoing effort that will allow other sites to rank instead of 1 site claiming multiple spots (1-5…etc) Continue reading SEO Predictions for 2012

SEO: How to Extract Common keywords from Google Analytics?

SEO – Extreme Keyword Analysis
Extracting phrases and common words to better format your pages

At some point, if you are a serious SEO your gonna want to dig a little deeper into data to see how your web page efforts are going.

The process I’ve used actually requires 2 bits of free software
01- Google Analytics account (with adequate amount of data to analyze)

02- A FREE piece of software called “Primitive Word Counter”

and Excel

Now I will say that upon looking for keyword extraction software I had almost given up. Though at the zero hour I found exactly what I needed to make a SEO overview of one of my clients sites.

So lets get into the process:

GOOGLE ANALYTICS PORTION:

01- Open your Google Analytics account (of website you are analyzing)
02- Go into “traffic sources–>Keywords
03- Change the date range to at least a year’s worth
(this will be under the drop down the upper right “date” are of GA)

Now at this point you’ll want to make note of how many total keywords were used- write this number down
04- Go to the top URL and change the portion that says Continue reading SEO: How to Extract Common keywords from Google Analytics?

Yahoo Site Explorer has moved on

Those of you who still rely on the old method of updating your Yahoo Site Explorer data, you can finally move forward. It was announced that Bing and Yahoo data would be merging a while ago. Confirmation of this came form a recent email I received from Yahoo themselves a week ago, that stated they would no longer be supporting Yahoo Site Explorer

The organic search listings on Yahoo! Search is now powered by Bing in the US and Canada. Webmasters should begin familiarizing themselves with the Bing Webmaster Center tool, as Yahoo! Site Explorer is being phased out in such markets. Data available in Site Explorer may no longer be valid for Bing-powered markets.

For SEO purposes, this is actually a good thing, as we can now concentrate on one data center to monitor. Namely Bing Webmaster Tools in which under :”Rank and Traffic Stats” you’ll see the Yahoo and Bing logos side by side.

In a recent run of Rank Checker I did notice a previously non-Yahoo listed site actually showing data now. I think more than a few would agree, that the Yahoo prudish structure of doing things (and charging) is a welcome good riddens in this department. Continue reading Yahoo Site Explorer has moved on

Enabling Google Pagerank in Internet Explorer (where is it?)

I just installed the Google toolbar, where did Page rank go???

OK, I wont go into the semantics of if PR is important or not, you can read more on Pagerank

Simply, this article is on how to get PR to show in your Google tool bar?

How to add a file extension to your WordPress posts?

If you are looking for the optimum SEO format for your filenames, you’ll want to set this up pretty early so you don’t got and change it later. If your wordpress site is already ranking and you have pages getting indexed, then this permalinks solution will cause errors on those pages within the search engine

Now the reason for adding a filename extension is due merely to a posting on Google where Matt Cutts says it’s better to have files with extensions for a more natural indexing. Meaning, that you might increase your chances slightly.

Again if your site has been around for some time, I’d pass on this little SEO tweak. Fro new sites, you’ll want to follow accordingly.

01- Login in your WordPress admin

02- Click Permalinks below the Settings tab

03– In permalinks page you will see your WordPress default permalinks structure is /%category%/%postname%/

04– Now just add .html to that structure.
So it will look like /%category%/%postname%.html Continue reading How to add a file extension to your WordPress posts?

On-page SEO: How well is your article ranking? – The right way to measure your results

While your results will vary depending on what words you use, I have found the best way to get a true scope is by limiting as much as possible. Though this requires a bit of demonstration:

So we will use an example to show the difference

01– First make sure you are logged out of Google (gmail) as it will skew the results in your favor. This need to be done so you get a true result rather than one that is based on your web profile.

Ok, now I will use an example to show the difference:

The article is one called :

Film Review: Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986)

Now as we fine tune the search, the object is to take out the special words that might make the search more specific, meaning that the results would be less likely searched. In the 3 examples I’ve taken out specific variables to keep the article as close to a wider search than specific.

As you see the ranking went down in each of the searches from #2, to #6 to #12

The last one is closer to a wider search entry so my ranking for that article would be 12

Film Review: Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986) = 2
Film Review Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer = 6
Review Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer = 12 Continue reading On-page SEO: How well is your article ranking? – The right way to measure your results
